goa 2015: D31 – roadtrip to tambdi surla temple ,ciao bella italian , waters club

* a 33 minute video of the day at end of blog post *

went on a good solid road trip today to tambdi surla . its way inland towards dudhsagar waterfalls . as usual in goa you pass so many interesting things on the way it inevitably takes a lot longer than anticipated 😉
plus on the way i had another holi day paint celebration in a village half way there , ive had about 3 of these now this season , keep finding them happenening in all sorts of random places still ! today i was mostly green coloured haha
anyway heres how the journey went – firstly the route

tabdi map-1

some things you see on the way .. temples , hidden lakes , skinny bridges , big bridges , houses falling down …

then you enter BHAGWAN MAHAVEER WILDLIFE SANCTUARY national park , and its inside this park that has the oldest temple in goa , the hidden and lost tambdi surla temple [that is once you pass the CUM PATROUING STATION !]

this is natures nest , a kind of eco lodge / event host / activity place near the park

as you arrive , deep within the park , you get to a car park with 1 stall and a guy making fresh lime sodas . there is also a mosquito and wasp ridden toilet .

entering thru the gate you walk a long cobbled road next to a restricted entry creek , the path is immaculate .

and then you first see what you have journeyed so far for – a stunning black temple in the middle of nowhere and that is the key to it surviving untouched for so long . small but so perfectly formed , the Mahadev Temple, Tambdi Surla is a 12th-century Shaivite temple of the Lord Mahadeva and an active place of Hindu worship. It is notable as the oldest temple in Goa, India. apart from an indian couple leaving as i arrived there where no other people here . certainly no western tourists . the temple is housed inside a railed compound , manned by one watchman guard , and the grounds where also perfectly looked after . its been on my ‘to do’ list for some time so im glad i eventually got here .

local wildlife had created their own temple nearby

it was particularly hot and sticky here , free of any wind , so riding back to anjuna goa on the scooter was made easier with the thought there was the ocean at the end of the road so i went straight there for a sunset swim arriving just in time .

after a visit to complete a perfect day it had to be ciao bella chapora , the best authentic italian around , like tambdi surla hidden away , but in a residential neighbourhood rather than a protected park .

after here it was off to waters nightclub / lounge on little vagator cliffs passing ocean pearl which looks cool at night , good deep house with indoor and outdoor parts to the club . shame the drinks are so expensive here [for goa] , as it puts off a lot of people staying all night . still , its a good night , with good dj’s playing cool house grooves rather than the goan psy trance nonsense !!
