goa 2015: D21 – mayem lake day trip, anjuna street food, night market, arvalem caves, temple & waterfall

decided to do a few trips today , lake , cave , waterfall , market . first we went for breakfast [well tea and lassi , day 5 of my ‘special’ diet] in anjuna . before setting off on our adventure i decided to visit an indian doctor in anjuna , a few lots of medicines jabbed in my arse plus 4 lots of pills twice a day for a few days and some rehydration salts . he says in 5 hours it will have stopped . a grand total of 917 Rps [£9/$13usd] for all the meds and the consultation . who needs the overpriced NHS ? i guess i overpaid tourist price for that but im more than happy and at least i will be able to actually have some food … and booze soon 😉 im sure it had pure adrenalin in it cos i really got an instant energy boost from it , lets roll feelin good !

so started with mayem lake where you can do some basic boating in circa 1970 old boats ! when you get to the lake you decide which craft you want to take out and the duration , pay the charge from the booking office at the gate , get a ticket and proceed onto the jetty where you are shown to your craft for however long you paid for . its a beautiful lake with tons of different birds and a whole load of peace . on one side are several houses and a small hotel . otherwise its unspoilt . a great fun day for sure . if you are a birdwatcher youll love it here . kingfishers diving in the lake [see video]

upon leaving the lake there is a guy who looks like chris kamara complete with 80s style almost jeri curl hair look , and that muzzy . 20Rps gets you a glass of goodness freshly squeezed . yum .

we then crossed the bridge and went to the far side of the lake where we chilled for a bit and flew the drone .

we left here , and about 15 miles or so away is arvalem caves . been here before but its a cool place to revisit , its a pandavas cave complex from about the 7th century . you can go inside and climb on top of it to to see the valley behind and water channels [?] on the roof . a solitary bat lives in one cave . outside are cashew trees . i put tons of pics on last time if you search my blog for arvalem in search box it will show them .

they have done some work in it since last time , have finished the temple major building work pretty much , and are building a new house alongside the dam . TIP before you go to the temple however take the large set of steps up to the waterfall that are on the left before you enter temple main gates , and see the temple last . however if you cant manage the 100 or so steps just head round the back of the temple , you can still see the waterfall

never knew but discovered this time you can walk further round and cross a botched together metal bridge and walk over the other side of the creek to a small complex that had a blaring sound system and lots of chairs and a marquee that was set up for some sort of village event . in the river a group of lads stripped to the standard issue brown underpants and splashed in the river .

when you walk back from the bridge you will be at the temple where you can take a seat with a drink and snack from the one solitary small shop before checking out the temple with the chariot and horses that used to be locked away hidden in previous years prior to restoring the temple .

returned back from the bicholim area , via mapusa , and stopped at the mini anjuna roundabout / circle , by the new petrol station . if you ever wonder why in the evening till late at night there are lots of people here its cos of the street food stalls . indian food , fast food , corn and fruit sellers etc . there is noronohas which is known for 10R beef croquettes , and cutlets etc . or 30R corn with butter or the best chilli and lime mmm from the man with the hot coals . and the puri sellers food is just absolutely amazing , definitely the best of the bunch ! heres the stalls and menus plus the food , literally pennies ie 30Rps/30p/50cents ‘bel puri’ . if you arent up for a taste adventure noronhas even have french fries lol

what an amazing day , and being saturday what better way to end it than the saturday night bazaar night market 7pm till 2am . superb food , music bars and clubs [djs or bands on various stages] , plus more shopping that anyone could ever need . the mrs got some henna tattoos from a really good artist doing intricate fine lines , and we ended up in the last few hours of the night in the open air clubs which where playing some great house music , while a bar on level one played really cool 80s dance and funk and some disco all night . we always think the market has some of the best music around , not the usual north goan trance ! if you search my blog for market there are tons of previous videos and pictures from the markets . everyone should check out the market , its a whole night out not just a shopping trip .

left the market at about 2am and on the way back it started to rain riding home , about an hour later there was a big electrical storm in night which is most unusual for the end of february .
