went on a new mission today ! off to arvalem caves [aka pandava’s caves] and waterfall in arvalem ,
which is inland near sanquelim . from anjuna you go eastbound accross goa vis assagao , mapusa (crossing the national highway) , tivim , assnora , bicholim . its about 1hour 15 mins on the bike . on the way i stopped for a drink near a massive banyan tree
soon a herd of cows came round the corner
and a bus .
the cows casued havoc blocking the road . on the opposite side of the road was an awful footy pitch , all red dust no green grass
further on the journey i passed a massive new bridge being built
and a nearby small dam under a village bridge
it was a fairly easy journey and nearing arrival there is a small sign saying waterfall [not caves] off a nearby major road . you can only see the sign if you are coming in the opposite direction from the logical way of all tourist beach routes … you have to love goa !
the stone is in the middle of nowhere really , there are railings out front and outside are cashew trees .
just as you are pretty much outside you get a sign telling you that
and showing what is is miles away from here
then i arrived – this place is awesome , really unique .
its a huge laterite black stone that was carved out into caves in about the 4th or 5th century by the pandava’s . ive never seen anything like it !
inside the caves are a handfull of temples
and chambers .
you can climb up on top of the caves , where there is what looks like a sort of water drainage line running round the back of the stone
from the top of the cave you can see a huge valley behind it too , so deep . wouldnt be too good to fall down here at all . someones old house rested at the bottom , and they where constructing a new one .
at the end of the valley it looks like an amphitheatre design , but im not sure if it is natural or not . its a large series of semi circular ledges .
then back down from cave tops into the chambers – VIEW INSIDE THE CAVES
so glad i made the trip here . a bloke started talking to me and said he knew the area well and asked me how i managed to get here from anjuna , so i showed him the sat nav and he was amazed .
i asked him where the old pump house was id heard about , and he said it didnt exist . i also asked him about the additional caves out further on and he didnt know them either . so much for knowing the area well mate , top blag , a blinking tourist knows it better . so i bid farewell to the ‘oracle’ and set off for just further on along the road – its the arvalem waterfall . you can go direct into the bottom of the waterfall part if the climb isnt good for you , this is what youll see [go straight ahead at side of temple , or left turn up stairs]
and a cat drinking from the stream !
but best way to start is to climb all the way up the long set of stairs and come in from the top of the waterfall .
passing this half human half canine dog
past the clock that always says 9 o’clock
at the top of the steps turn right , it isnt signed or obvious , i had to ask . go thru the turnstile incase theres a mad rush of people from somewhere lol
and down the path
you then climb down lots more stairs alongside the waterfall
viewing the reservoir at the bottom
makes a great sound
till you reach the bottom again .
all down the waterfall steps are lots of seats , look out points , and huge concrete benches . its been quite well done actually . youll meet a few others there , perhaps
theres hardly anyone there … 2 school girls , 2 adults and 2 indian tourist lads i started talking to from north india . at the bottom youll find the old pump house that ‘the oracle’ said didnt exist
so it is here – a 50kw hydro electricity generation plant
it was only built in 1984 but its really dissapointing to see the indians have let it go to rack and ruin . likw most things it seems when they are built that is it , zero upkeep . thinkgs just literally crumble away . it clearly hasnt worked or been used for years . what an absolute waste to have this natural generation point , and for someone to design and build the thing , then not maintain it . total utter waste . one of my biggest dissapointments in goa was to see this absolute stupidity , it defies belief .
you can jump down into the empty reservoir [maybe not in monsoon?] and its a nice moment , pump house , reservoir , waterfall into the lagoon , dam …
at the bottom they where building a new house for someone to live in by the looks of it. women dont half graft hard
the reservoir was low and you could sit on the banks
next to the dam
on the way back i stopped at the temple they are remodelling . you can go inside for a look its cool
its next to a shed
and another large block building
which turned out to be an old hotel plus a couple of shops . the hotel isnt open , one of the shops was .
it might have been some time since they last sold one of these miss shapen bottles of lemonade , or served tea in these cups ! such character in the picture .
stopped for a drink and saw 3 women carrying bricks on their heads down to the reservoir house i saw being built . hard work . so i bought them all a coke , wel lall the women the fellas can get there own ! it was hard for them to comprehend i was giving them a drink and didnt want anything for it [except give the emptys back to the shop owner lol !] .
while sitting there i noticed a large corrugated building with padlocked gates ? hmmm …
i went for a nose thru a gap and saw wooden horses inside . i grabbed one of the local kids and asked him to show me – couldnt believe it when he pulled back the gates and saw 4 horses and an elephant all pulling this massive wooden temple chariot thing . awesome – check it out !
cos he saw i liked it he then showed me another smaller one that was painted too . random things you find around every corner in goa. and right next to the chariots 2 cows in a smelly pen , it stunk !
i set off for home but kept seeing more things and couldnt resist stopping !! on the way back i passed a huge stadium . it was goa football stadium , called duler stadium . i thought i gotta have a nose in here , but it was all locked up .
further to the side i saw a set if gates part open so i , pulled the gates back a bit a walked in and up the stairs – after miles upon mile of red dust it was amazing to see the greenest grass in goa ! here was the whole football stadium and nobody about . if your caught offer cash youll probably get a VIP tour was the way i looked at it ha ha . to be honest i think the grass was faked astoturf plastic grass , it just looked too perfect .
i was wanting to look in here aswell , and take a few pics but i thought im pushing my luck now lets just leave it before i get arrested !
i set off again and was well on the way home and had to cut thru mapusa by the highway . people where everywhere and i realised there was a local market on , plus what looked like a mini fun fair . stopped and went for some food and a look around for a while .
when i got in talked to a few young indian kids , they said careful of your stuff in here they will rob you easily . didnt see that but some of them just charmed the cash out of your hands . i gave her 50 for a picture , she agreed . only problem was after i gave to this girl and she followed me for 15 mins and wouldnt go [in a nice way] , it was like id bought her ! i bought her a corn on the cob when i got mine and told her that was it now ! sometimes its hard to not give .
so many people and sooo many shops
side sttraction funfair stalls , like rolling lemons into holes !
bangin out that electro lad !
win great prizes HAHAHA
you can buy name on rice – WTF ?
see hot chicks
and custom super bikes – why ?
and numerous rides .
they had a big wheel loading people up then taking them for a ride . weird thing is the guy running it treated it as a extreme ride. this was the machinery used , a big pully belt . i crapped it taking the picture behind it , thought it was going to break at any moment . the operator was revving the arse out of it and that thing SHIFTED round at pace ! so fast …. its a big wheel not a rollercoaster mate ffs . so so dangerous . infact the more he saw me , and i was taking pics , it seemed to encourage him to go even faster . must have been consuming massive amounts of honeybee brandy lol ! i got off before his bravado killed someone . i mean people screamed as the big wheel went round ?! wrong
there was a massive que , everyone wanted to go to one particular attraction . not what you think – the temple . it was to pray . maybe they where thinking of going on the big wheel and needed divine help !
got good food there, corn on the cob
you can also get sugar drinks , look at these contraptions you see everywhere
it was dirty , grimy , and loads of rubbish everywhere , great fun !
the sun was just starting to set
finally before i left i paid my 40rps admission and went in to watch the guys and gals do “the wall of death” .
there are 5 of them who are trained riders who dare to drive the WOD !
ive seen these in movies but never real life . its a wooden bowl they drive round ‘sideways’ lol .
the thing was falling apart as you can imagine in india , hardly safe – ramshackle planks of wood , some planks missing , decaying , split , wood rot – it was all there . H&S field day !
they do some final checks on the bikes
and go !
after watching them loop round and round with the 3 bikes at same time , then a guy gets in a car and all of them ride the wooden bowl at the same time while skimming the top edge and taking cash notes off people while standing out of the top of the car door sideways up ? absolute madness .
on the way out i thought you can do anything here if you ask the right person and wave the cash .
i thought im having this wall of death in the back of that car !! i asked one of the lads ‘who was the boss man’ and started a convo . four of them gathered round talking in indian and laughing their heads off at me – like i must be mad . probably . i was just laughing back and bartering as id had a couple of beers at the fair . we eventually came to a price and agreement and i got access to the bowl ! they dont usually do this , its not open invitation or anything i just got very very lucky
after a 15 -20 minute wait while the top gallery filled back up with new paying watchers they whooped up outside ,
this was last chance to bail out chicken shit !
the bikes where off buzzing round me
the warning signs where everywhere !
then it was into the car , and we took off ! no safety talk or offers of seat belts or harnesses , this is india , we just went for it , 1 hand videoing , 1 hand hanging on for dear life so i didnt fall out the open window on the door which was now the floor hahaaaaa . OMG .
looping 100’s of times – it was relentless 😉
then on top of all this the driver got out of the door of the spinning car and started collecting notes while steering loop the loop sideways !
the guys on bikes looped us and started hanging onto the windscreen wipers and bonnet while on their own bikes , madness
then more bikes over took us till it was over and we hit planet earth – PHEW
it was like a early 90’s polo or something ! its weird you kinda stick to the seat sort of with the momentum keepnig you there
you cannot comprehend how FUBAR this is on your senses . i just laughed all the time , it really was such a memorable moment from goa . delirious , sensory bombardment , adrenalin rush , dizzy … didnt puke tho and thats what counts 😉 it took a good minute or so to get proper balance again and stand up normally after i got out the car , they all thought it wa hilarious , and so did i … YESSSSS ! i left that fair on such a high , this moped now seemed so boring in comparison
arriving home , alive , i went for italian pizza at roma in chapora . its on the main rd by ‘doroga’ bikers bar and ‘sakana’ japanese restaurant . had some really nice cool grooves playing and the pizza wasnt too bad . great dough , maybe a big cheese heavy . was ok tho .
compared to the japanese opposite , no comparison – the japaese kick their arse big time !!! ill do a report in a blog day or two if you keep reading …
some day that … caves , waterfalls , stadiums , wall of death – goa is just one big massive ADVENTURE !
