goa trip – day 31 – free soul cafe, chapora fort WOW , 9 bar club

did breakfast at free soul cafe on anjuna main rd . eaten here twice before , hes a sound guy who runs it , really couldnt be any more friendly . toasted muffins , beans , and the best milkshakes ive had in goa ! nice teas and coffees too . he has great free wifi , and a nice looking little restaurant – hes really made the most of his place . good luck to him , its still really new .

had a beach day in ozran [aka little vagator] . your never sure what will happen next in goa – and while on the beach i saw a bloke run towards a cow and jump up off a log and over the cow . the cow shit a brick ! it bolted one way , the lad ran the other – hilarious . the cow wasnt injured or harmed or it would not be funny at all , just a bit startled that a guy was flying over it . when in goa ! after a minute it was back and they made up with each other . to be honest the cow was pretty chilled – i think it saw the funny side !

heres todays exchange rates

about 4pm decided id go to chapora fort , figured where it was it probably had a good sunset being perched high up overlooking several beaches. its not overly tourist , its not even that easy to find on a few random signs , some barely readable

on the way in chapora you pass the crazy garden with a 12ft high space rocket and huge butterfly , again you never know what youll see in goa lol . who knows what the story is behind it … spaceman !

after that you have to dodge a low hanging tree over the road wtf !

ive been to a few forts but for some reason not chapora , i just kept overlooking it each day for some reason . its a bit of a hike getting to the top , you can go part way up in chapora backstreets , but then have to park and hike the rest of the hill . took several minutes . its not hard but youll need to have good working legs to hack it ! plus its just loose [red dust] gravel and stone underneath .

the higher you go the better the views get and the pictures to go with it … looking back down into vagator , ozran and anjuna beaches and out to sea

then you reach the summit

go round the next side and and the views appear down the chapora river and the sreas of chapora and siolim towards the chapora river bridge and over into the far north of goa

go past the cross inserted into the forts walls

you enter the fort thru iron gates and an arched tunnel entrance .

there isnt much left of it , crumbling walls and a centre temple is pretty much all you get

you can climb up on the walls and walk around some sides

a lot of the floor is a mix of red gravel and dust , and that black volcanic rock

got the “money shot” as an indian guy got his picture taken by his friends on the central temple part

but its the views which make you come here . climbing on top of the walls on one side gets you looking inland towards mapusa , and the ghats are in the distance . you can see right up the chapora river , various houseboats and fishng boats here .

you can see a huge colony of thousands sea gulls of various types that inhabit a natural island/sandbank .

behind that is the beach of morjim – the next northern beach over the chapora river . many people are on the beach . further up round the cost ashvem beach .

you can see way up , probably terekhol and further still towards maharashtra which im about to go to tomorrow – CANT WAIT !! walking round further you look out to sea , a cluster of about 20 small fishing vessels off the coast newar the headland .

there is a green bird 10 ft away from me in a tree catching insects [kingfisher – dont know, tail looks too long?] ,

and an eagle in the tree about 15 ft from me .

all sorts of birds dozens of species . eagles and buzzards overhead … infact. ive seen more birds here than anywhere i think . your so high up here in the fort .

the fort is a wide open space in the middle and there where 2 guys doing some of that extreme yoga ive seen at arambol , not ripped but god they must have some strength to do this , amazing . [ill put some arambol videos up on this in a day or two , ill go back cos i ran out of batteries the other day] .

you can leave the perimiter wall on sea side of fort thru a small gate opening

and walk out down a gravelly path to the hill at the end that juts out into the sea .

the whole bay opens up

doing this at sunset is just a moment .

this is not an exageration , but ive been north to south goa and this , after the arambol hippy drumming thing , is definitely my number 1 sunset place . MIND BLOWINGLY GOOD ! and just 15 mins from baga and not crowded . i guess they are all eating their egg & chips down there in baga hey πŸ˜‰

Parts of the hill had small scrub clearing fire patches

you walk right to the end of the coast takes several mins , and the views wow , northinto morjim and ashvem

along to vagator ,

ozran where ‘our shack’ is , and out to sea

epic sunset trip for a couple of hours after days heat you will really enjoy this …. if you got there say about 4pm , it would give time to climb the hill , a look around / pics , then out to the hill for sunsetting and back to fort .

so it was a climb back up the hill into the fort thru the little hidden gate

past the old temple

and out thru the gates

after that it was some quick food then off to 9 bar [nine bar]

its a club carved into the rock and cliff face in vagator . you even enter it thru cave tunnels with fluro day glow paintings of the evolution of man . the monkey carrying the ghetto blaster was awesome !

it was bleary going in , imagine coming out wasted ! [not photoshopped , quite a cool image walking in]

this is just opening easly on … they had a free party on tonight . the club is round , big dancefloor with seats all the way round , they do food , have a reasonable priced bar , a big sound system ,

and a sunset terrace part with seats .

its not as big as the gigantic hill top . but it still easily holds a four figure capacity , while hilltop must be 3000 capacity . it going giong once darkness falls the freaks come out !

heres a video tour of the joint – tunnels in , bar , restaurant , sunset terrace , dancefloor

Hi, Appretiate the efforts you have put in the details; in terms of write ups, photos and listing of all the places; Kudos.
I am visiting North Goa in February 2nd week (2014). Came here after reading your post at IndiaMike Forum.

Would you please suggest which of the north Goa beaches is best to stay for 3 days. I will be visiting with my husband and I will prefer some neat and clean places, with good bars to hang out nearby having great music, picturesque scenaries..
